Hello Cicero, Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. I haven't read 'Cloud Atlas' yet, but I went to see the film on the very day that you posted your comment. Fascinating and gripping, although a little overlong. I must get round to the book soon.

"The Jews have a similar story about Rabbi Akiba who explained the essence of Judaism while standing on one leg: ‘What is hateful to you, do not do to your brother.’"

that story is about Rabbi Hillel.

Dear Bill, Thanks for your comments. Have you noticed that on this site, under 'Zodiac Sermons', there are 27 sermons on the book. I gave these a few years ago in Dublin and I followed the yearly cycle, two (or occasionally three) per sign. These are a little more accessible than the book and more clearly related to the actual months and seasons. (I couldn't seem to get them in order though!)
As far as the star names are concerned I have nothing much to offer by way of explanation. I chose the ones that seemed to fit my thesis and ignored the rest! Some of them I can vouch for - like Ma'alaph in Cancer, which is Hebrew and does refer to 'thousands', and so is appropriate for the two feeding stories in that section of the Gospel.
It's good to hear from you Bill Let me know how you get on with your reading.

I've got a copy of your book Eve, and I'll read it with interest - I'm currently trying to read the whole of Dickens, something I promised myself a long time ago.

Thanks for that Marti. I think, as ex-Catholics, we have a great deal in common. However, although I don't consider myself a Catholic any more, I'm grateful for the religious education I received in my infancy, and during my ministry in Dublin I've met some amazing Catholics - clerical and lay. On Sunday I was preaching in the Dublin Unitarian church and there was a Franciscan friar in the congregation. In full regalia, too! He's been attending for a few weeks apparently.

Hello Lewis, Thanks for your question. It's an important one. The Greek is epi tou amphodos, which can be translated as 'at the double road' or something like that. amphodos is made up of the adjective amphi (double) and the noun hodos (road or way). An amphitheatre is a double theatre (a Greek theatre was normally just a semicircle, so an amphitheatre is a full circle, like the Coloseum). The KJV has 'at the place where two roads meet', but all the other translations just mention the road, or call it a circular road. The KJV translation suits my point, so I've kept it! Details like this are important in a text like Mark which is generally very bare and lacking in description; when such a word appears we should pay attention to it.

Good evening Rev. Bill Darlison.
I attended Kensington Unitarians morning service for the first time today and you deliver the message. Many thanks, my soul was felt refresh and my spirit lifted. The Shaydoola story I really needed. I am asking you please for a copy of the story to give to my children, I would be ever so grateful for the story.

God bless
